Mirfield v Wetherby
Wetherby were the visitors for the penultimate West Yorkshire League game. The Mirfield team were apprehensive about the game having lost at Wetherby in the reverse fixture by five games to nil. The situation was not helped by a defeat at Heckmondwike the previous week by the same score line.
The game started with the two triples games and Harrogate took control early and led by 7 - 0 in both games.
Things looked really bad for the Mirfield teams.
In the first game Mirfield were represented by Stuart Bolton, Chris Hopkins and Christine Whitehead. The Wetherby team of Delia Wells, Ann Oxley and Alan Oxley soon extended the score and eventually ran out comfortable winners by 13 - 2.
In the second game Mirfield players were Ian Greaves, Robin McDermott and Nev Scholes and Alec Brown, Sue Brown and Ian Wells for Wetherby. After the early set back Mirfield changed their order of play. Robin started pointing well and even thought the score reached 10 - 3 Mirfield looked a better team. They fought back and managed to overtake the Wetherby score to lead 12 - 11. Wetherby then were able to score the two points needed to win the game. This made the match score 2 - 0 in Wetherby's favour. Were we on for a 5 - 0 loss once again?
In the pairs games the Mirfield players showed determination to do well and improved their performances. Nev and Christine showed excellent team work against Ann and Alan and managed a 5 and a 4 in consecutive ends . They soon ran out victors with a crushing 13 - 1 victory. Nev likes to point out that he gave Wetherby that 1 point by moving the coche onto their boule in the second end !!
In the second pairs game Robin and Ian continued their improvement against Sue and Alec. Robin's pointing was first class and Ian was able to support this. They eventually ran out winners 13 - 10.
This made the match score 2 games each and therefore everything rested on the final game. Stuart and Chris were up against Delia and Ian. Stuart produced his normal excellent pointing skills and Chris chipped in with some scoring shots. They were able to chalk up 12 points but it took a few ends for them to finally score the point required for victory by 13 -9. This made the match score 3 games to 2 in Mirfield's favour.
Well played by all who represented the club enabling this well deserved victory over a very strong Wetherby team.
