Huddersfield v Mirfield

The Mirfield team was disappointed to come away from Greenhead Park with a three games to two defeat.

Things looked good after the triples games with Mirfield winning both. In the first game, Christine Whitehead, Neville Scholes and Walter Bottrill represented Mirfield against the Huddersfield team of Sue Crofts, Brendan Callaghan and Richard Hartley. The Mirfield team took an early lead and maintained their superiority throughout to take the game by a score of 13 - 9 with a fluke shot from Neville who in trying to promote Christine's boule missed completely but nudged Walter's boule onto the coche. Colin Child commented that he hadn't seen that shot as a possibility. Neville admitted neither had he !

In the second game the Mirfield team was Jim Campey, Ian Greaves and Kevin Hepworth playing against Rita Schofield, Robin Schofield and Elizabeth Tidball. The Mirfield team played consistently with each player contributing to a 13 - 11 victory. Therefore after the triples games Mirfield led 2 games to nil.

In the pairs games, the tide turned in Huddersfield's favour. Elizabeth and Brendan took on Christine and Walter. The contest was even until the Huddersfield pair scored a five which enabled them to take the game 13 - 7. In the second pairs game Jim and Ian never produced any consistency of play and were beaten 13 -3. This made the score two games to each team with one result remaining. Kevin and Neville were up against Rita and Robin. The Huddersfield pair surged into a 10 - 0 lead and looked to be in control of the game. To their credit Kevin and Neville fought back and with the help of a score of five the score reached 11 each. The tense encounter finished when Robin was able to add to Rita's scoring boule and win the game 13 - 11 and take the match by three games to two.
