Month End Melee

Final Monday Monthly Melee

A cracking afternoon's weather greeted 32 players to the quarter-way stage of the Month End Melee competition. Bright blue sky and fluffy white clouds and a temperature around 12 or 13 deg. c.

It was nice to see Paddy turn up with her broken left wrist in a pot with a very elegant knitted cover to keep it clean. No signing it with rude messages then !!

As (almost) stated in previous emails Paddy plays boules with her right hand so she was OK to join in today's matches.

By some miracle we managed to get all the numbers drawn and matches were underway just after 1.05pm.

Jim was back from his Italian Job, but his performance on the piste was as bad as the acting of Michael Cane. His first game partnered by Walter looked promising as they got off to a flying start, but halfway through the game, his wings were clipped by Ann Clarke and Harry who powered ahead and took the game.

As is usual at the month end there were some very closely fought matches and no fannies. Funny how there's a little cheer when that first point is scored - one less chance of a fanny trophy. Nev and his partner Christine A looked like they were coasting towards a big point difference win until they took their feet (foot) off the pedal and let Gillian and Carole McD back into the game at 7 - 6 to Nev. After a team talk order was restored and Nev and Christine ran out 13 - 6 winners. Plus 7 wasn't the best score though. That honour went to Irene and Ken at plus 9.

Some +6 and +5 scores meant that there was all to play for in round 2.

Again there were some really close games in this round.

Harry was paired with Christine W against Margaret and Gillian. A very slow start by C&H, in fact it looked like we were not going to score, but soon we caught up for a neck and neck finish. It has to be said, that Margaret and Gillian played really well and despite Harry shooting a few boules off the coche, he also lost points by trying to bag another point. Eventually the girls came out on top for a well deserved win and the second win for Margaret.

Jackie and Neville were pitted against Paddy the Pot and Ruth in a ding dong battle in which Nev and Jackie got to 8 points one point at a time - talk about hard work. Paddy and Ruth meanwhile had got to their 10 points relatively easily. After in improvement in their luck Nev and co got to 10 all and with a final push to get 3 at one end ran out winners. Nev got carried away and ran down the piste to hug Jackie after that unexpected win. Sorry Jackie I think I frightened her - can't think why.

Christine A consolidated her lead during this round to +19 with a 13 - 1 win with her partner Mike K with Mike himself still in contention on +15.

On to round 3 with 8 people on 2 wins - oooooh exciting stuff.

Harry's third game gave him a good partner in the shape of Michael K against Carol G and Cheryl. Try as we did, we were losing 8-0 and fearing a fanny result. A lucky boule gave us our first score of one, but a few fantastic ends later and we overtook the girls and grabbed a win.

There were the usual collection of closely fought games and after a very long game to decide the Jackie/Lucy vs Ken/Robin match all players were back in the pavilion enjoying excellent Lemon or Orange drizzle cake made by Viv. Excellent - thank you Viv.

Boule
Ian announced the results and in joint 3rd place with 3 wins and +11 was Kevin and Ann C each getting 5 points.

In second place with 3 wins and +19 was Mike K who receives 6 points.

But in first place with 3 wins and a magnificent +24 points was Christine A who nets 7 points. Well done Christine - but she did have some excellent partners !!!

No fanny trophies to hand out which was a shame as Lucy and Steve had donated a Fanny Postcard to present to the unfortunate players who'd earned it. Maybe next month.

So after month 3 Ian is in the lead with 3 other players 2 points behind in joint 2 place.
